Litter Boxes
- The optimal number of litter boxes is n + 1, where n is the number of cats you have.
- Clumping clay litter is safe for kittens above 2 months. Clay litter is preferred by most cats and is the most instinctual for them to use
- Uncovered litter boxes are preferred by most cats. Covered litter boxes trap odors and may be unpleasant for your cat to use
- Unscented litter is best! Cats are much more sensitive to smells than humans and they may avoid scented litter
- The best way to avoid a smelly litter box is to clean it regularly. Removing feces and urine twice a day is optimal. Sanitize the litter box and replace the litter every few months if it is especially smelly. Replace litter boxes with deep scratches
- You can use a normal bin with the sides cut if necessary, but select one with a flat bottom or it will be difficult to clean
- Avoid any litter system that uses pellets. Pellets hurt their paws and your cat may start to go outside the litter box

Food
If you have any concerns about a cat’s diet, consult your vet. The following are general recommendations, but every cat may have a different diet that works best for them, just like humans. Nutrition RVN is also a great source

- Kitten food is generally recommended until they’re 8-12 months old
- Kittens generally should have access to food all or most of the time while they’re growing. Our kittens are free fed dry food and get wet food 2-3 times a day
- Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet and Purina Pro Plan are our favorite brands overall. Royal Canin, Hills and Purina all meet WSAVA guidelines
